Adelaide-based artist Rebecca Hastings is set to unveil a haunting new series of paintings that continue her exploration of the “unheimlich,” or the uncanny, Hastings presents a series of classically rendered images that evoke a deep sense of futuristic, dreamlike unease. Informed by the outputs of AI-generated images but created in direct opposition to them, the paintings in 'Feed' explore the interplay between the digital, psychological, and physical realms, delving into how AI infiltrates and guides our thoughts and actions.
Hastings sees AI as responsible for generating imagery that is slick and seductive, yet soulless. These ‘slow images’ and the endless feed of scrolling in which they are consumed articulate an uneasy ambivalence towards what lies ahead and reflects a state of anxiety often found within notions of the post-human condition. Focusing on this timely issue, her paintings explore possible future states of the human form, unwittingly brought to bear by AI’s influence.
