The High Country Flyathlon is a 'triathlon' of sorts combining three activities of growing popularity; trail running, fly fishing and locally crafted beer.
Run along 14 kilometres of undulating singletrack, through lush montane forests at the foot of Mt Buller. Don't forget your fly rod though because flyathletes have to attempt to catch, photograph and release a fish from the Delatite river at some point during the race. The size and species of fish will award the flyathlete a time bonus on their run. Run a bit slower than your mate but catch a bigger fish, you might just take home the overall prize. If you're not much of a runner that's okay, you can still compete for the biggest and smallest fish categories. There are heaps of prizes to be won. If you're a new fly fisherman there will be guides along the course offering free advice.
After the event, flyathletes will receive a meal and local beer, encouraging them to share some war stories and make connections in the community.
Their motto is 'conservation through recreation'! This is a not-for-profit event and all money raised will be donated to the Australian Trout Foundation to help support their river conservation projects.
