Shine On Gimuy is an immersive First Nations and Bama led multi-arts light festival. The Artistic Director is creative arts and festivals pioneer, Rhoda Roberts AO.
Held along the glistening foreshore of tropical Gimuy/Cairns, the 2024 festival will bring the Esplanade and Salt House Festival Hub to life from 3-13 October.
Hosted by the Yidinji Nation, on their homelands, the festival is a celebration of all forms of First Nations storytelling, showcasing innovative arts and cultural practices, as well as illuminating insights into science and industry. Country—and First Nations peoples' connections to Country—are integral to the festival.
In 2024 visitors can experience the signature events:
Artstory Light Walk (an immersive installation of light and art sculpture, animation and soundscapes),
Calling Country Ceremony (a coming-together of dance groups from local and neighbouring Nations and clan groups—a ceremony not performed for a century until 2023's event),
Deep Wisdom Conversations (a series of symposium topics, remarking on philosophy, science, the arts, culture, and politics),
Music Makers performances (featuring world-renowned and emerging talent),
Blak Markets (art, crafts and business stalls),
Unplugged (Open Mic).
Shine On Gimuy is produced by Queensland's Shine On Productions and is presented in partnership with QMF. Shine On Gimuy is part of the QMF Tropics Trail.
